Poker Player Ranking

Omaha Hi/Low

January 20th, 2012 by admin

Omaha is the world’s second most popular variation of poker. One of the reasons is that you are dealt four initial œhole cards, unlike Texas Holdem where you are dealt just two. This increases the possibility of creating hands, and in-turn creates more action around the table, and creates larger pots. Omaha is a high-low split game, with your initial 4 hole cards; there are also five community cards. To create your best hand, you must use 2 of your hole cards, and 3 of the community cards. There is no qualifying for the high hand, the highest hand automatically wins half the pot, and could win the whole pot if no low hand qualifies for the other half.

To qualify for the low pot, you must have a 5 card hand, with no card higher than an 8 and none of those cards paired. Straights and flushes do not count against you for the low pot. The winning low and, goes to the player with the lowest high card, for example, if a player has œ4-5-6-7-8 they would lose to a player holding œ3-4-5-6-7. If two players hold the same high card, then the second high card will be the deciding factor, unless that card is also shared, in which case it goes down to the 3rd 4th or 5th respectively.

Bets would be placed in the same format as most of the other games, first the small and the big blind are placed on the table before the hole cards are dealt, then the hole cards are dealt and the first round of betting begins. After the first round the flop is dealt, then another betting round commences before the turn card is placed on the table. The next round of betting tends to be the most exciting before the final river card is placed on table, the final round of betting then commences and after the showdown decides who wins.
